Religion in the Middle Ages
In Medieval England, the only recognised religion was Christianity. Life was dominated by the church and religion. They believed that everything bad that occured was caused by the evil spirits, and dedication to God would prevent them from the bad spirits.
Holes would be drilled in the skull because it was believed to release evil spirits. During the Black Death, flagellants whipped themselves to avoid the plague because they believed God was punishing them. The church was extremely powerful, and there were often quarrels about whether the King or the church was more powerful.
